Very few people are aware that Sigmund Freud, the father of modern psychoanalysis, already identified the therapeutic capacity of cats, which is the basis of “pet therapy” today. Basically, companionship with pets helps people feel as good as having undergone psychotherapy. If you have pets, you probably know this well, the affection they can give you is second to none.
A German psychotherapist specifically identified cats as a source of well-being and happiness. The Japanese population also has the same idea: in the land of the rising sun, the cat is a revered animal, a symbol of happiness. In Asia, there are even places where cats roam free and let customers pet them. The reason for these choices is quite simple: the Japanese represent an intense work ethic, so they often have problems with stress. The presence of cats helps people to have an emotional connection with other living beings and reduces stress levels.
Cats are independent creatures who probably won’t need you. This will help establish a relationship of fidelity and love without mutual dependence. After all, you are fascinated by them, not them by you.
Why cats?
Obviously, we cannot say that they are selfish and completely self-sufficient animals: rather, they could be if they remained free from birth. Despite this, cats are very adept at staying away from their owners. Cats are quite territorial animals that like to defend their spaces, their habits, and why not, even their food. Despite all these characteristics, they may suggest that you are dealing with a cold animal that cannot give love, cats are the exact opposite. They love to be petted and flattered. Obviously, if you overdo it, the cat will leave showing a certain indifference, more related to its independence than to the desire for love.
Another characteristic that makes them perfect therapy pets is their natural calmness. If you are a person who is particularly stressed, living in contact with these animals will be able to restore your inner rhythm. Their senses are acute and they have the ability to switch from rest to active performance in a very short time. So with them, you will get used to paying attention to what surrounds you.
Cats are calm and wise animals, capable of enriching your life and showing you how joy can be found in simplicity. Like all animals, they also have a highly developed intuition and this allows them to go from independence to affection exactly at the moment you need them. Having a pet is certainly a big commitment and you have to be careful not to neglect your cat: it doesn’t deserve it and if you do, it will give you the same indifference in your time of need. If, on the other hand, you manage to establish a sincere relationship, you will gain great cheerfulness.
